Indoor LED display demonstration concept for a COB vs SMD LED screens buying guide

COB vs SMD LED screens: which should you choose in Pakistan? Start with the viewing distance, content and installation environment. COB and SMD describe how LEDs are packaged; neither label alone tells you whether a screen will look better, cost less to run or suit your site. Compare specific models at the same pixel pitch, display size and operating brightness before ordering.

This Mustang LED buying guide helps offices, retailers, educational institutions and project teams ask the right questions. For a broader introduction to the available display technologies, read our Leyard SMD screen provider guide.

What is the difference between COB and SMD?

SMD means surface-mounted device. Packaged LED components are mounted on the display module. COB means chip on board: LED chips are mounted directly on a substrate and covered by a protective encapsulation layer. Exact construction varies between product ranges.

Packaging is only one part of a complete display. Pixel pitch, calibration, controller settings, cabinet alignment and the source signal also influence the result. A COB screen and an SMD screen with different specifications are not a fair like-for-like comparison.

COB vs SMD LED screens: 6 checks before buying

1. Pixel pitch and viewing distance

Pixel pitch is the distance between adjacent pixel centres. For the same physical display dimensions, a smaller pitch provides more pixels. People reading spreadsheets from nearby desks generally need a different specification from an audience watching large video graphics across a hall.

Ask to view your own presentation, small text and video at the nearest and furthest seats. Do not choose solely by a technology label or a simple distance formula. Our indoor SMD screen guide provides additional application context.

2. Image quality at normal brightness

Compare both candidates under the lighting conditions you expect to use. Examine dark scenes, skin tones, white slides and grey backgrounds. Look for uneven colours or visible cabinet boundaries. A very bright showroom demonstration may not represent everyday use in a meeting room.

3. Surface protection and cleaning

Ask how the exact model handles accidental contact and how its surface should be cleaned. Some protected surfaces can be useful where people approach the display, but packaging alone is not proof of impact resistance. Request the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and any applicable test documentation.

4. Service access and spare parts

Confirm whether modules can be serviced from the front or rear and how much access space the installation requires. Ask what happens when a module develops a fault: who removes it, where it is repaired, how long replacement takes and whether matching spare modules are included.

5. Power, heat and operation

Request both maximum and typical power figures, together with the test conditions. Compare equivalent screen sizes and brightness settings. Do not assume every COB product uses less electricity than every SMD product. The controller, operating schedule and content also affect consumption.

6. Complete installed cost

Compare the whole project rather than the panel price alone. A useful quotation separates the display, controller, mounting structure, electrical work, installation, commissioning, training and support. Check delivery charges, taxes, warranty terms and exclusions in writing.

Which option suits your application?

Meeting rooms and control rooms: prioritise readable text, comfortable brightness and the resolution your source system can deliver. Test the actual dashboard or conferencing layout before approving a model.

Retail spaces and reception areas: consider ambient light, viewing angles, daily operating hours and public access. Evaluate surface protection alongside image quality and service arrangements.

Auditoriums and event spaces: match screen dimensions and pixel pitch to the seating layout. Camera recording may introduce additional requirements, so test with the intended camera settings where relevant.

Outdoor locations: select an explicitly outdoor-rated model. Check the specified ingress protection, brightness, environmental limits, mounting and electrical protection. An indoor COB or SMD screen does not become suitable for outdoor use simply because its surface looks sealed.

What should a quotation include in Pakistan?

Send every supplier the same project brief: installation city, indoor or outdoor location, screen width and height, nearest viewing distance, content type, operating hours and service-access constraints. Request the exact manufacturer and model, pixel pitch, pixel resolution, controller, power requirements and proposed installation scope.

Keep a written comparison of warranty coverage, response arrangements, spare-module availability and handover training. This makes different offers easier to assess without relying on an unsupported “best screen” claim. Read our SMD screen installation checklist when planning the site work.

Frequently asked questions

Is COB always better than SMD?

No. The right choice depends on the exact products and application. Compare image quality, resolution, maintenance, environmental suitability and total installed cost using the same project requirements.

Does COB automatically mean a higher-resolution screen?

No. The pixel pitch and physical dimensions determine the pixel resolution. COB describes the packaging approach, not a fixed resolution.

What is the price of a COB or SMD LED screen in Pakistan?

There is no single price that accurately covers every project. Dimensions, pixel pitch, product series, controller, mounting and installation scope all affect the quotation. Ask for an itemised offer for your site.

Manufacturer reference: Leyard’s MG-2COB product brochure is an example of model-specific documentation. Always check the current datasheet for the exact model quoted; specifications from one series should not be applied to every COB or SMD screen.
